It's more the "impact" upon one's self should they become a victim of identity theft. You'd certainly (over time) be able to "correct" the evil doings of an imposter BUT it's a Royal PITA to do and can be a LONG battle depending on how much damage is done i.e. opening credit card accounts, store accounts, etc. I've been a victim and it took me over 3 months to get things straightened out including "battles" with people trying to convince them that the person pretending to be me is not me. In some instances, the institutions "security" department couldn't be more indifferent to my dilemma, blowing it off as an "inconvenience" to THEM. In one case, I almost went "in person" to a specific facility to "talk" to their head of security who wouldn't speak to me or entertain my request for intervention to STOP the damage being done in my name. The guy was a real POS and I was ready to yank him over his desk by his tie. Fortunately, I was able to go over the assholes head and get things resolved but as stated, it is NO picnic having to undo the damage identity thieves can cause.
